Calculating Net Run Rate

Step by step explanation

A team's run rate (RR) is their total number of runs divided by overs faced. As an over is made up of six balls, each ball counts for 1/6 of an over for the purposes of calculating the net run rate, despite being normally written in cricket's notation as .1 of an over.
So if a team scores 250 runs off 50 overs then their runrate is \frac{250}{50} = 5. If they got that same score off 47.5 overs, their RR would be \frac{250}{47\frac{5}{6}} \approx 5.226
The concept of net run rate involves taking the opponents' final run rate away from the team's run rate. The only complication is that if a team is bowled out, it is not the balls faced which their score is divided by; instead the full quota of overs is used (e.g. 50 overs for a one day international and 20 overs for a Twenty20 match).
Usually, runs and overs bowled are summed together throughout a season to compare teams in a league table, as the following formula shows-
\mbox{net run rate }=\frac{\mbox{total runs scored}}{\mbox{total overs faced}}-\frac{\mbox{total runs conceded }}{\mbox{total overs bowled}}

Letter to Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Dear MS Dhoni,
Captain- Team India.

I hope atleast yesterday's match, vs Australia will be an eye opener for you. I would like to point out some issues I spotted from that match.

1. Rohit Sharma's inclusion in final XI.

You called him as an extra batsmen. He deserves better position than that. He is one of the finest fielders. He is a classy act. He along with Raina makes a perfect 3rd and 4th position. As a captain you should stand by your palyers. If you think he has enough talent, give him more chances,d defiantly he will turn in to an asset on long run. one good example is Yuvaraj and Sehwag. look at their careers in the beginning and the kind of encouragement they got from Sourav. Now they can win match on their own.

2. Role of Ravindra Jadeja:

Is he a batting all-rounder or bowling all-rounder or genuine spinner??

>> if he is a batting all-rounder what is he doing at no8. To be at that position he needs to clear boudnaries more often. Is he of such caliber?? Get him to the top ahead of yuvaraj and yousuf and try, that can work out.

>> If bowling all rounder, there are many who can bowl better than what he is doing now. Yuvaraj, Raina and Rohit can easily bowl 6 overs in minimum wht ever kind of pitch it is. So it is waste of poistion.

>> If he is in for bowling alone, Amit mishra, Ojha or chawla can be in final XI. Irfan is the genuine all-rounder who can be in ahead of Ravindra Jadeja.

3. Inclusion of Vijay ahead of Dinesh Karthik:

This is a tournament of high pressure as it is a world cup. we need to have batsmen with good experience. Vijay has never faced international class bowlers that too on a bouncy tracks. Karthik is in a good form and also he suits gambhir as a partner bcoz they are working as a team for 3 years now. They know each other very well. And also he can keep wickets or a good fielder.

What is the role of senior players like Yuvaraj, Harbajhan in the team??

When Jadeja is taking pasting from Aussie bastmen, what is Yuvaraj and Harbajhan doing?? It is their duty to run to him and give advice and some suggestions to improve, because it is a team not Jadeja's performance. If sehwag is there on the field, definetely he will run to him to boost his confidence and will help him in that situation.

This is not good as a team. You need to take care of youngsters in the team.

Dear Mr Cool, dont get blinded by success..

Regards,

Kartheek Sanka.

Letter to Sunil Gavaskar

Dear Gavaskar,
commentator/ ex-captain, team India.

During 15th Match, Group F - Australia v India you commented on the way Rohit Sharma played his innings in the beginning. He is not the kind of person you thought. He has a steady head on his shoulders.

In commentary, you said that Rohit doesn't know how to apply himself, he should learn from Mr Cool, Dhoni. After seeing the match do you still stand by your words??

Sad thing is that every one in the world accepts him as a best young player in this whole world. Even in yesterday's match Ian Chappel, clearly stated that he is fine players against both pace and spin. He called Rohit as his Son. He deserves place in final XI. He needs more exposure at international level so that he can be a big asset in long run. Not just Ian, Jason Gillespie, Ganga and almost everybody praised him. Gilchrist and Lehman also

Look at his innings, at beginning bowlers have upper hand, s he decided to break their rhythm. Nothing wrong in his approach, he learnt quickly that that is not how he should go and paced his innings very well. You people like Sehwag going after bowlers irrespective of situation, pitch and bowler.

Your words will have lot of impact on selection and team morale. So please think before you speak.

Regards,

Kartheek Sanka
